Volume and Mass

Students conducted several activities on  finding volume and mass of objects.
Students who missed this day will need to come in to make it up.

There is no homework.

Metric Conversions

Students reviewed metrics and conversions.
Students then worked on completing a review sheet. If they did not finish this in class, then it is homework.

Penny Lab

Students finished their penny lab explaining WHY the water domed on the penny.
We then worked together to complete a sheet on the different types of variables!

Sci Method Notes cont and "Drops of water on a penny"

Below are all the notes from Scientific Method.
Students then worked through these steps to answer the questions of "How many drops of water will fit on a penny?"

Scientific Method

1.     State the problem or question

2.     Collect observation and information

3.     Form a hypothesis – educated guess

4.     Experiment

a.     Follow procedures

b.     ID the independent variable – the variable that you change or manipulate. Can only have ONE

c.      ID the dependent variable – the response or what is measture

d.     Control – the constant It is the part of the experiment that you are NOT manipulating

Example 1: You are studying the impact of Miracle Grow on plants. The independent variable is the administration of miracle grow. The dependent variable is the impact on plant growth

Example 2: You are studying the impact of withholding affection on rats.  The independent variable is affection. The dependent variable is the rats reaction

5.     Collect and analyze data

1.     Table or chart –raw data

2.     Graph – compare the data

a.     Graphs and table/chart

         a. qualitative – senses

         b. quantitative –numbers

Scientific Method

Students made borders for their Scientific Summer papers. These will get hung up around the room so be sure to read what your peers did this summer!

We then began a review of the scientific method and started to take notes - below are the notes so far:

Candle Observations/Qualitative and Quantitative

Students turned in their signed safety contract. I need to have this BEFORE next weeks lab.
Students turned in their direction sheet on "How to tie a shoe" OR "How to send a text message"

Students then identified the difference between qualitative and quantitative observations and observed a candle before, during and after burning.

"Scientific Summer" is due on Monday.

Scientific Summer and Safety Notes

Students received a "Scientific Summer" sheet. Please ask them about this assignment. It is due on Monday September 8.
Students set up their spirals and began taking notes on safety.

If students did not turn in their welcome signature and their blog permission slip they did so today.
