Sci Method Notes cont and "Drops of water on a penny"

Below are all the notes from Scientific Method.
Students then worked through these steps to answer the questions of "How many drops of water will fit on a penny?"


Scientific Method

1.     State the problem or question
2.     Collect observation and information
3.     Form a hypothesis – educated guess
4.     Experiment
a.     Follow procedures
b.     ID the independent variable – the variable that you change or manipulate. Can only have ONE
c.      ID the dependent variable – the response or what is measture
d.     Control – the constant It is the part of the experiment that you are NOT manipulating
Example 1: You are studying the impact of Miracle Grow on plants. The independent variable is the administration of miracle grow. The dependent variable is the impact on plant growth
Example 2: You are studying the impact of withholding affection on rats.  The independent variable is affection. The dependent variable is the rats reaction

5.     Collect and analyze data
1.     Table or chart –raw data
2.     Graph – compare the data
a.     Graphs and table/chart
1.     Title
2.     Labels
3.     Units
3. Two types of data
         a. qualitative – senses
         b. quantitative –numbers
                      6. Conclusion
                        a. restate the problem
                        b. restate the hypothesis and accept or reject it
                        c. describe what you did AND include possible errors
                        d. what would you do differently next time
