Viruses

Students read Viruses Chapter 2 section 1. They must complete the worksheet for homework which is due tomorrow.
Remember that students also need to continue their research on their disease and that the disease "Wanted Poster" is due on Monday.

Disease Research and Poster

Students continued researching their disease today. Students MUST share their google doc with me. My e-mail address is:
gartonj@billingsschools.org. 
Students must create a "Wanted Poster" for their disease. This poster needs to be be NEAT and IN COLOR. All information that students found doing their research needs to be included in their poster. Today was the last day that we will spend in class working on this project - everything that is not finished needs to be completed at home. This poster is due Monday.

Disease Research

Today we spent the class period researching our disease. Below are some of the questions that you will need to find answers to. Students can copy these questions and paste them into their google doc!

  1. Disease Name:
  2. What type of organisms causes the disease (for example, bacteria, virus, protist, fungi, worm, etc.)?
  3. What is the scientific name of the organism that causes the disease?
  4. Picture or sketch of the organism that causes the disease or what the disease “looks” like.
  5. What does the organism do to make someone sick (for example, is it producing toxins, destroying cells, absorbing nutrients, etc.)
  6. How is the disease spread?
  7. Is there a vector agent (a vector agent is an organism that spreads the disease, usually an insect)? If so, what is it?
  8. In what part of the world was the disease first discovered or reported? Or What part of the world is the disease most common?
  9. What are the symptoms of the disease?
  10. What body systems or organs are most affected by the disease?
  11. What is the treatment and/or cure for people with the disease?
  12. What part of the population does the disease primarily affect (for example, elderly, women, young children, dogs, cats, plants, etc.)?
  1. What is the disease’s historical importance (for example, did the presence of the disease cause migrations, kill a famous person, become a widespread epidemic, was it associated with major flooding in a region, etc.)? 
  2. Is there a vaccine for the disease?  What is the immunization schedule? Are there any side effects and if so what are they?
  3. Who discovered the vaccine and when? Have changes been made to the vaccine over the years?

Disease Detective


Today students took a short quiz on cell requirements and classification.
We  barely got started on our introduction to our disease research project. Students must choose 3  choices from the list below that they would like to research. Students will only be researching one disease but no two students can research the same disease. There are many other childhood diseases that I will accept ie. rubella, norovirus. Please ask your parents and grandparents for  information concerning childhood diseases.

Wrap up

Today we went over last nights questions concerning Domains: bacteria, archaea, and eukaryote. Review of autotrophs, heterotrophas, prokaryotic and eukaryotic terms were also discussed. We then watched a short video to help wrap up this chapter.

Domains and Kingdoms

Today we read "Domains and Kingdoms" pages 26-29 in class. Students then had to answer all the quesitons on page 29. Answers should be in their spirals. They need to finish this for homework.
Students must also  do the Writing in Science activity on page 29. This is homework, too.

Shoe Classification

Students were having a bit of trouble grouping items and then breaking them down into much smaller groups so....today we took shoes. Students had to group them based on characteristics and then end with groups that had only one shoe in it. For homework students need to answer questions 1,2 and 5. They also need to write 2-3 sentences about what they learned about classification.
