Chemistry Experiment #1

Periods 1, 3, 7, 8 worked on this experiment today. It will completed tomorrow along with taking a quiz.
Students need to know:
Oxidation #'s : what they are, how to determine them and how to write a chemical formula
Balancing equations
Naming chemical compounds paying particular attention to the transition metals with their use of roman numerals.
And all the elements that I have given so far - the first 36

Finish Naming compound notes and Bond with a Buddy

Students continued working on Bond with a Buddy. More than 18 bonds will earn extra credit points.
If students did not finish this they must come in before or after school to complete.

Bond with a Buddy

Students received a baggie with element cards. They then had to find a buddy and bond naming the chemical formula and writing the chemical compound.
We will continue with this tomorrow

Balancing Equations

Students corrected their balanced equation worksheet and handed in. If students scored 5 or less they may redo.
Students then took a few notes on naming compounds.
We ended the class with a game of Kahoot.

Balancing Equations

Students learned how to balance equations today.
They got a worksheet which needs to be completed tonight for homework.
The following is a link to the video we watched in class on how to balance

Candy Compounds and electronegativity

Students finished their candy compound worksheets.
They then were given an electronegativity sheet to complete. This is homework if not finished

Candy compounds

Students used gum drops to make molecular compound models and write out the Lewis dot diagrams.
Have a great 4 days and make sure to go outside!!

Review on Bonding

Students reviewed bonding and took notes on how to name covalent bonds
Included is the answer sheet for the worksheet but please complete the worksheet and then check your answers

Bonding and Lewis Dot diagrams

We reviewed Oxidation numbers and then proceeded to practice drawing Lewis Dot Diagrams of two elements combining.
Students should know the difference between ionic and covalent bonds.
We will have a quiz tomorrow on the next 15 elements and the two different types of bonds.
Homework: Study

Oxidation Numbers

Students were introduced to oxidation numbers. Students should realize that these numbers correspond to the number of electrons an atom will either gain or lose to make an outer shell of 8. Losing an electron(s) fives a positive number and gaining electron(s) will result in a negative oxidation state.

Electron Movement

Can you make a piece of plastic bag float? That was the question the students had to answer today using the tools that I provided them.
Students also received a list of the next 15 elements that they need to know for an upcoming quiz.

Monday, February 2, 2015

Element Tiles

Students continued with presenting their element tiles and then taped them together according to groups so that we can hang them all up in the hallway for a Giant Periodic Table
There is no homework.
