Students used their rubrics to grade their peers works. Both the papers being graded and the graders are anonymous. This acitivity shows students how difficult it can be to grade even with a rubric and why they really need to pay attention to rubrics when given one.
Of course I will grade all papers and give the final grades!!

Density

Students took an element quiz on 1-49 a review!

Students turned in their Sum-Thing Fruitful lab if they didn't last Friday.
Students then worked together to create the tallest tower to support a marshmallow. Students used 29 pieces of spaghetti, 1 yard of tape, 1 yard of string, and 1 marshmallow.

Safety Notes and Scientific Summer

Students turned in their signed safety contracts and blog permission.

Spiral Set up and Scientific Summer Assignment

Students set up their spiral including 3 pages of Table of Contents. They then cut and glued their Multiple Intelligence Survey Results into their spirals.
Students received a copy of blog permission and the safety contract which MUST be signed by parents and is due on Wednesday.
Students received directions for Scientific Summer (below) which is due Wednesday September 5th NOT Friday August 20th like it says on the sheet!!!

Multiple Intelligences Inventory

Students took a survey to determine the best way that they learn and the jobs that might fit them the best.
Their spiral, pocket folder, and signed sheet are due on Monday!

Class Expectations

Students received a sheet on class rules.

A single subject spiral is needed for science ONLY and a pocket folder for science papers ONLY.
These will be checked on Monday August 31st.
A reusable water bottle with students name on it will be due on Friday September 4 for extra credit.

First Day

Welcome to 8th grade Physical Science! I am looking forward to a exciting and rewarding year full of engaging and meaningful activities. We will be studying process sills, the metric system, the scientific method, chemistry, physics and STEM all to get you exited about science!

Capsule Launch

Students launched their capsules today.
Tomorrow we will finish up this activity.

Egg Capsules

Students stuffed their capsules with their materials and placed their eggs inside.
Students also found more measurements ie. mass, density.
Students received a blank drawing of their capsule which they need to complete for homework.

Students in all periods except for 2nd brought in bottles and supplies so they began the next step in capsule building. Students in Period w worked on unscrambling words and then matching them to the appropriate definition. All words and definitions had to do with forces.

Spaghetti Tower Graph and Conclusion

Students calculated weight to strength ratio by dividing actual weight held by tower weight.
They then ranked them in order.
Students then graphed tower weight vs  weight held.
Lastly, students wrote a conclusion on the back of their graph.

Over the weekend, if you drink any pop from 2 liter bottles and have empty bottles please save and bring them in. We need them for our last activity of the year!

Students weighed their towers and then added weight until their tower collapsed.

Marshmallow Challenge

Students watched the TED talk on the Marshmallow Challenge.
They should have gotten two take aways 1. build prototypes testing as you go and 2. Triangles and other geometric shapes will be the strongest.
Students then had an opportunity to build a taller, stronger tower!

Students were given 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 yard of tape, 1 yard of string and 1 marshmallow.
Their challenge is to build the tallest tower that will support a marshmallow.

Students collected all information for their 4 team walkers.

Students finished the 4 questions from yesterday and corrected them.
We then went outside and did a "Walker" activity to demonstrate speed, acceleration and velocity.

Students tested in Homeroom during periods of 3 and 4.
All other classes read Forces and Motion in their books pages 282-287 and took notes.
I also gave notes to students.
Students also needed to work 4 problems in their book.

Cholesterol and Testing

Students missed 6 and 7 periods due to testing.
 A science teacher at the Career Center asked if my students would rate her students work on cholesterol. So my classes watched a powerpoint on cholesterol. Tomorrow they will rate 3 of the projects.

Bernouilli's Principle

Students experimented with the concept of Bernouilli's Principle.
Students also witnessed several Bernouilli Demonstrations.

Pascal, Bernoulli and Archimedes

Students corrected and handed in their packets from last week.
Today students figured out how to make a "Cartesian diver" work - it's all about pressure.

Engineering Challenges

Students finished up their 3rd engineering challenge and turned in ALL 3 today.
Today is the last day to retake the last test.
I will be gone ALL next week and will not be posting - so perfect behavior please!

Students had shortened classes. Today they worked on completing the study guide.
