Concept Maps and Spruce seedlings

Students worked on several things.
Each class planted 2 blue spruce in pots. We will keep these indoors until the spring and then we will plant them outside.
Each student received a concept map, or flow chart, to complete. This is an excellent tool to use to study for the test that we will be having later this week on Chapter 1 in the Bacteria and Plant book.

Domains and Kingdoms

Students read pages 26-29 in the Bacteria and Plants book. We then took some notes on each Domain.
Students had about 20 minutes to work on their classification poster which is due Monday November 18th.
We may have time to work on the poster in class tomorrow as well so students were instructed to bring it with them.
Homework: Any student that does NOT have their organism, the 8 classification levels, 2 pictures and at least one fact about their organism needs to research that tonight!

Common name
Scientific name
Each level of classification including Domain
2 pictures minimum of their organism
1 unique fact
Posters must be neat. All pictures need to be in color regardless of  whether drawing or printing
This poster is due on Monday November 18.

Volume Lab Practicum Part A

Students worked in partners and worked on a volume lab to figure out how much each line represents on a graduated cylinder. Once they had this determined(and many were incorrect) they needed to figure out the average number of drops it takes to make 1 milliliter of water. This information all needed to be put into a small chart.  Some students will need to come in before or after school to work on this in class.

Students will be in the library today and tomorrow. The librarian will give them an orientation to google docs. Students need to create one paragraph that includes the answers to the following three questions
1. What is the saying to remember the order of metrics
2.  What are the three base units
3.  What do the base units measure and what tool is used for each

To acces google docs students need to go to the billingsschools.org. click on students and log in.

3. Restate your hypothesis and accept or reject it.
4. Include possible errors in which you will explain 2 possible reasons for not coming out to 100%, explain what the variables are, and include a mathematical explanation related to the results(Look on your data table)

Qualitative vs Quantitative

Students discussed the difference between qualitative and quantitative data. Students then generated a list of qualitative words.
Students were given a word search. They must define 4 of the words: control, conclusion, inference and both kinds of variables as they relate to science.
Hint for inference - "It is cloudy outside so I can infer that it might rain later"
Hint for conclusion - I don't want the steps but I want to know what a conclusion is

 The word search doesn't have to be complete BUT the definitions must be completed for homework if not finished!

"The Thin Green Line"

 This week is the beginning of our frog unit. We started by watching a movie title "The Thin Green Line"
 Students created a KWL (K - what I know, W - 2 questions about what I want to know, L - what I learned) chart in their spirals. In the KWL they wrote about frogs and are to fill in the L for what they learned from the movie.

Those students that were absent today can watch the movie at home but please only watch the first 25 minutes as that is as much as we watched today.

Students turned in Key Terms (from Monday) and Strawberry DNA lab.
Students recieved the study guide for Friday's test and worked on that the rest of the class period. Students will have some time to work on it tomorrow and then we will review.

Strawberry DNA

Students extracted DNA from a strawberry lab.

DNA Models

Students reviewed DNA and RNA. Students then made a very small model of DNA using gum drops and licorice. Students received a review sheet for key terms. This is homework if not finished.

DNA

We corrected the DNA worksheet today. As I anticipated, many students had trouble with the back page and so we explained it thoroughly in class today. Many students were able to work through it and figure it out on their own last night - and they will be rewarded for their efforts.

Last day of Dog Presentations!

Today was the last day of dog presentations. We will be doing a few stragglers later this week when we can work them in. As a reminder - these dog projects were assigned on February 5th. Students had to do projects with a minimum total of 40 points and a maximum of 60 with 20 going towards extra credit.
We will be testing genetics and DNA next week - most likely on Tuesday.

Dog Projects

Students continued work on their dog presentations.
As a reminder these projects are due on Wednesday February 20th.
These projects were on the back of their hard copy of the questions but I will post them here as well.

Acrostic-Solo
-At least 8.5/11
-Neatly typed or written
-Use your breed and other words to equal at least 10 letters
-Each descriptive phrase must begin with one of the letters from the target word
-Each descriptive phrase chosen must be related to the target word

Comic Strip-Solo
-At least 8.5/11
-At least 6 cells

Dog Project/Research

Today was suppose to be  a day where students could work on their dog projects. However, not very many students finished with their research and having all the answers in their google doc. So....it ended up being a combo day. some students finished up their research while others worked on their projects.
As a reminder to students - ALL answers must be in your google doc that you shared with me. If you shared it with me once you DO NOT have to share it again.

Dog Project Questions



Use books and the internet to research your dog. You must use at least 2 books and at least 2 websites. Cite your sources 
Be sure to answer ALL of the following questions
1.      Where is the breed originally from?
2.      When was your breed first discovered or recognized?
3.      What was the breed used for historically?
4.      What is your dog used for today?
5.      What are some jobs that your dog might have in today’s society? Describe what these jobs are and why your dog can do this job well.
6.      Does your dog make a good pet? Why?
7.      What is the average weight?
8.      What is the average lifespan?
9.      Does your dog have any genetic/health disorders? Explain and describe in detail
10.  What is the temperament of your dog? What does this mean?
11.  What colors can your dog be? Is there one color that is the most common? What is the nose color?
12.  How much exercise does your dog need each day?
13.  What are some interesting history and/or facts about your dog? You must have at least 5 additional facts.
14.  What are the major dog groups and which group is your dog in?
15.  What are the vaccinations all dogs need and how often?
16.  What is inbreeding and what are the pros and cons?

Punnet Squares/Dog Project

Periods 2 and 3 were introduced to Punnett Squares and looked over pages 84-87
Periods 5 - 8 were introduced to the Dog Project. Students must choose a breed to research. All students need to research their chosen breed. Students then need to choose from numerous options to create a project/s worth at least 40 points

Crossword Puzzle

Students completed the backside of yesterdays sheet whish was the crossword puzzle. We then watch a short video on cancer that explains how cell division in cancerous cells is different from cell division in healthy cells.
Homework will be to finish the crossword if not finished in class and study for upcoming cell division quiz.

Mitosis Song/Skit

Students were shown some YouTube videos of Mitosis songs/dance. Students were given some example lyrics for mitosis songs.
Assignment: Students must create a song/dance/skit that demonstrates mitosis.
Students may work alone or in groups.
We will have some time on Monday and Wednesday in class.
Students may record/film themselves at home OR perform live on Friday.
This assignment is due Friday January 25th.

Measuring for vocab squares

Instead of giving the students printed paper for vocab squares I decided to employ measuring skills and have students measure to create their own papers. Most students need practice with ruler use and definitely dividing fractions in half. Great activity. Tomorrow we will start on the actual vocab.
